Meet 20-year-old Angela Busheska from N. Macedonia, who was inspired to get into STEAM after falling in love with solving problems through her 7th grade math Olympiad team. Her app EnRoute helps useres live a sustainable lifestyle; her latest update will utilize machine learning algorithms to help users abandon fast fashion.
Describe your STEAM projects/interests.
My main project is the app EnRoute. EnRoute is a mobile application that helps individuals across the Globe to live sustainably friendly, through their daily shopping and transport activities. Currently, I am developing EnRoute 2.0, a version that utilizes machine learning algorithms to abandon fast fashion.
What/Who inspired you to get into STEAM?
I was in 7th grade when I joined my school’s math olympiad team. Since then I fell in love with solving problems, both on paper and in real life!
What are some advantages you think being a female brings to the STEAM field?
In order for tech and STEM to work for everyone, those creating the technology have to represent the communities they serve.
What would you tell young girls who are interested in STEAM, but too intimidated or discouraged to pursue it?
We need you! The world needs you! As a college student, I can assure you that both humanities and STEM subjects are equally hard to study. But don’t forget studying STEM can give you a chance to cure cancer or be the first person on Mars, just saying!
What do you think is most exciting about the future of STEAM, and is there a specific advancement you’d like to see happen?
STEM is inevitable, and at this point, we can’t imagine a day without it. As we see the growth of artificial intelligence and machine learning, I am looking forward to see humanity utilizing these technologies for social good.
Who’s your favorite female icon and why?
NASA Mathematician Katherine Johnson is my all time favorite icon! She was the first African-American women who changed the rules at NASA, and made the administration know that if they don’t get all together, they won’t get there at all!
